In the final match of the WTA 1000 tournament, the American secured her first title in Qatar

American player Amanda Anisimova was crowned champion of the 23rd edition of the Qatar TotalEnergies Open women’s tennis tournament after defeating Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets today, Saturday.

In the final match of the WTA 1000 tournament, held on the center court of the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, the American secured her first title in Qatar by overcoming Ostapenko 6-4, 6-3 in one hour and 20 minutes.

Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, accompanied by His Excellency Mr. Nasser bin Ghanim Al Khelaifi, President of the Qatar Tennis, Squash, Padel, and Badminton Federation, and Mr. Saad Al Mohannadi, Tournament Director, presented the championship’s Golden Falcon trophy to the American champion and the runner-up trophy to the Latvian player.

The 23-year-old American, Amanda Anisimova, ranked 41st in the world and winner of only two previous titles, was playing in her first final in Qatar. She had a strong start in the tournament, defeating Belarusian veteran and two-time Qatar champion (2012 & 2013) Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 7-5 in the first round. In the second round, she overcame Spain’s Paula Badosa 6-4, 6-3. She then defeated Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist, 6-3, 6-0 in the third round.

Anisimova continued her impressive run in the quarterfinals, overcoming Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to reach her first semifinal in Qatar. She then secured her place in the final by defeating Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-3.

On the other hand, 27-year-old Latvian player Jelena Ostapenko, ranked 37th in the world and winner of eight career titles, including a Grand Slam at the 2017 French Open, was playing in her second final in Qatar. Her first final appearance in the tournament was in 2016, when she lost to Spain’s Carla Suárez Navarro.

Ostapenko started her campaign strongly this year, defeating Japan’s Ito Aoi 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. She then overcame Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova 7-6, 7-5 in the second round. In the third round, she continued her strong form by eliminating Italy’s Jasmine Paolini, the world No. 4, with a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

In the quarterfinals, she defeated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinals, she faced Poland’s Iga Świątek, the world No. 2 and three-time defending Qatar Open champion, and managed to defeat her in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 to reach the final.
