2018 Qatar ExxonMobil Open draw held / Top-seed Thiem to face Donskoy

The draw for the 2018 Qatar ExxonMobil Open was held on Saturday in the presence of tennis stars, Florian Mayer of Germany, Feliciano Lopez of Spain, and Jaziri Malik of Tunisia, and Qatar Tennis Federation and Qatar ExxonMobil officials.

Tournament’s top seed and world No. 5 Austrian Dominic Thiem, who had a great season in 2017, will start his first shot at the title with as he takes on Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy while Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta, the second seed, will be in action against Borna Coric of Croatia.

Third seed Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic, meanwhile, has been drawn against Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany.

Defending champion and former world number one Novak Djokovic will be missing in action in Doha as he had to pull out at the last minute due to injury.

Tournament Director Karim Alami said, “It is my pleasure to welcome everyone, especially the players to this year’s tournament. In line with our tradition, the next few days will no doubt showcase the best of tennis and I’m happy that the quality of this year’s tournament is top-notch as ever. I wish all the players the best of luck.

Alami added that all arrangements are in place to ensure another successful tournament at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex and that 2018 Qatar ExxonMobil Open.

Lopez, whose opponent in the first round is fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, said, “It's great to be here again and compete and challenge and I hope that I can have another good year like 2017. I've played here and have some good wins and some tough losses but all in all been good."

“It's the first tournament of the year and tough to say who'd excel. Everybody is coming from Christmas and even though they all are training hard, January is always a surprise season and especially in this tournament," he added.
