Sunday, April 7, 2013 – Doha, Qatar – On Saturday, the Qatar Tennis Federation proudly hosted the singles final for the 1st Qatar ITF Futures 2013 at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex. No. 3 seed, Marek Semjan of the Slovak Republic, defeated unseeded Daniel Cox of Great Britain, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(6). This is Semjan’s second ITF title of the year and his fifth overall in his career. The 25-year old has been playing ITF events since 2005.

This was the second time Semjan lifted a champions trophy this week as he partnered with James Marsalek of Great Britain to win the doubles title on Friday with their 6-2, 4-6 (10-7) win over the French pairing of Rudy Coco and Jules Marie.

It was a hard-fought singles victory for the Slovak as Cox took an early lead with a first set win. The Brit caused an early tournament upset when he defeated the No. 1 seed, Spain’s Jordi Semper-Montana, in the first round. Cox then rolled through his next three matches without losing a set until he reached the final. Semjan did not face a fellow seed until thequarterfinals where he defeated German’s Peter Heller and then had to battle to pull out a 7-6(1), 6-7(3), 6-2 win against No. 5 seed Robert Marcora of Italy in the semifinal. It was this fighting spirit that helped him elevate his game a step further in order to go the distance in the title match.
